Kenneth left home at 16 to attend college in Chicago. He accompanied his cousin, Owen. Kenneth's oldest uncle made a deal with him that he would pay for Kenneth's tuition and room and board if he accompanied his cousin Owen to school for the first year. He left on an ocean liner for the "mainland" and then took a train to Chicago.

He spent the first year at Loyola in Chicago. He decided that studying Business was too easy, so he applied and was accepted at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). After graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering, he stayed another year to study Electronics at IIT.

It was 1942 and he was offered a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the army. He turned it down and instead went to work for Belmar, an electronics firm in New Jersey. Six months later, he was drafted into the Army.

He was only 16 when he left home. Popo cried and cried. Owen’s parents had a big buick. We went to Diamond Head, watched the boat go by.
