Kenneth Wah Leong Young was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on February 12, 1919, the second son of Wong Shee and Young Fong. He was one of 9 children: 6 sons and 3 daughters. Growing up, they lived in a house in Kaimuki. His parents worked the fishpond at Kuapa Pond, now Hawaii Kai, sold the fish in Chinatown, and operated a grocery store in Chinatown.

Kenneth attended St. Louis High School and graduated when he was 16 years old. He would leave Honolulu on a steamship to attend college in Chicago.

To find out more about his parents and the history of fishponds in Hawaii, go to family history.

He was kind of a loner, quite a person, didn't take any crap, a tough little guy. Older persons used to say Kenneth was a tough little guy and didn't hold back. Our first cousins were bad and picked on him, teased him, because he was intelligent.

~ Robert Young
